The 4th edition of the Somali Heritage Week takes place on October 12th – 13, 2018 at the Kenya Cultural Centre. The two-day festival of arts, culture, literary and informative events celebrates the different dimensions and complexities of Somali identity in East Africa. The theme for this year is Connectivity – Building Positive Connection Among Kenyan Communities through Arts and Culture.
Apart from panel discussions, there will be performances and exhibitions by local and international acts.
According to the organisers, the Somali Heritage Week is split into two phases with the first phase composed of workshops and the second phase being the exhibition. This year’s workshops targeted women, culture, and the deaf community. The workshops helped to train women in making of table mats and bead works, hairdressing, carpet weaving and heena designing. These will be showcased during the two days of the festival.
The world acclaimed short movie Watu Wote will also be screened. The movie is based on the Mandera bus incident in 2015 when Al Shabaab gunmen attacked a bus and tried separating Muslims from nonmuslims, but the Muslims stood firm to defend their fellow passengers.
The event is organized by Awjama Cultural Center, a non-profit organisation based in Eastleigh 8th Street, Tansim Shoping Mall. The center has a library and a small museum of Somali cultural artifacts.
